Lovebird Care

MYTH'S
Lovebirds need to be kept in pair's to be happy. This is not true. If pet lovies are caged together they bond with each other and not with you. If you have more then one pet lovie its best to keep them in separate cages.
Female lovies make bad pet's. I personally dont find this true. Our family pet is a hen. Luna is kept in cage away from the other lovies. She has plenty of toys and gets daily attention. Luna has laid eggs, but I removed her happy hut, and shreadable toys. Anythng that would make her want to nest.  Also giving them more sleep helps curve the nesting. I make sure to rearrange cage, toys and add more toys once a week. Anything to keep her busy and her mind off nesting.

Lovebirds are about 13-17 cm in size, 40-60 grams in weight. Lifespan of 10-20 years.

Cage: At least 24x16x16 no smaller. Make sure the cage has cornors. Parrots go to corners for security. Bar spacing 1/4"

Toys: Lovies need plenty of toys to keep them busy. They are very energetic. No mirrors should be placed in a cage. They see themselves in the mirror and think they have a friend.

Diet: Small pellets, some seed (for small birds), millet, pasta, wild rice, scrambled eggs. old fashion oatmeal, grits, leafy greens (bok-choy, collard greens, mustard greens, and kale etc), birdie bread, fresh fruits, and veggies
I dont buy any seed mix that is sunflower seed based. Sunflower seeds are high in fat. I buy a Safflower based mix, add a small amout of black sunflower seeds, hemp, flax, pumpkin seeds, and wheat groat etc. to it.
